How to Tie-Dye at Home (Because You Know You Want To)

Gambar
Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, tie-dye was having a high fashion moment; the psychedelic swirls were all over the S/S20 runways. Fast-forward a few months, and the trend has evolved from high fashion to "home fashion," thanks to tie-dye sweatsuits becoming the unofficial quarantine uniform. There's no need to splurge on "luxury loungewear" for this trend, because you can get the look at home. Honestly, you can tie-dye anything: Sweatshirts, sweatpants, socks, sheets, shirts, even shoes. So grab an old item of clothing, and let's get going! Step 1: Gather Supplies I suggest getting a tie-dye kit—this one includes everything you need and has 15 different colors. Your must-have items include: Squeeze bottles for the dye Gloves Dye or bleach Rubber bands ...

What are the Best Women’s Lounge Shorts?

Gambar
14 items in this article 2 items on sale! Photo: John Kobal Foundation/Getty Images Last month, we dove deep into the world of loungewear, and talked to dozens of stylish men and women about the sweatshirts, T-shirts, and sweatpants (so many sweatpants) they'd been living in lately. Weeks later, loungewear is still top of mind, but as temperatures start to rise, we've been thinking about one item in particular: the lounge short. It's a broad and all-encompassing category — there are gym shorts, pajama shorts, sweatshorts, and even sweatershorts — so to get the lay of the land, we asked women with excellent taste about their personal favorites. The results range from Soffes ("the first ...

As the coronavirus disrupts senior year Maryland high schoolers lament lost rituals and traditions

Gambar
Experts in teen psychology said the ways U.S. teenagers mark the end of childhood usually coalesce toward the end of high school — with proms, final sports games, senior trips and, ultimately, graduation. In the absence of these storied traditions, they might find the transition to adulthood difficult. Maryland Smith Center for Global Business Second Annual Forum

Dave Cook: Hosting state track at Eastern Washington a labor of love

Gambar
The phrase Labor of Love is apropos. Especially when it's missing in our coronavirus-impacted world. This was to be the 25th year the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association would hold one of its state high school track and field meets on the campus of Eastern Washington University and Roos Field, and before that when it was known as Woodward Field. Personally, it was going to be my 25th and last as coordinator of entries and results for an endearing weekend event which serves as the culmination of the sports season for the WIAA. The solitude and quiet of Cheney is loudly apparent these days. The usual silent days of summer have been extended with weeks and months of a spring slumber. While high school and college classes are held online, our lives in sports have stopped abruptly as well. It will for sure be a ghost town when this year's three-day meet was scheduled to take place, starting Thursday. For years, the sol...

Tuesday Funnels and Flooding

Gambar
With No Humility - Bad Things Often Result "When men lack a sense of awe there will be disaster" said 6th century BC Chinese philosopher Lao Tsu. His words are more relevant than ever. "Tornadoes can't hit downtowns!" Or "It's only a Category 2 hurricane. We can ride it out at home!" Or "My truck is high enough off the ground - we can cross this flooded road!" Or "Forget the dial, let's flip the switch and fully open up the economy now. I'm dying to see how it all turns out!" To be human is to accept a grudging respect for forces beyond our control. Humility is an asset, not a liability. With all deference to The Beatles, the path to summer is a long and winding road. Last night's cloudburst gives way to slow clearing today, but a push of cooler air will leave us reaching for sweatshirts early Friday and Saturday. At least the weekend should be dry wit...

Volleyball provides light for Aptos’ Christian Humphreys in dark time

Gambar
Aptos High senior volleyball standout Christian Humphreys hasn't yet packed for college, but one article of clothing will surely make the trip with him when he continues his playing career at NCAA Division III Benedictine University in Chicago. It's a green sweatshirt with "TEAM JETT FIGHTER" emblazoned across the chest. He wore it prior to each of the Mariners' four matches this spring and was off to a hot start when the season was cut short by the coronavirus pandemic. "That is not leaving my side," Humphreys said. "I love that sweatshirt." His entire family has similar sweatshirts with the same slogan, a tribute to Humphreys' younger brother Jett, 5, who lost an 18-month battle with brain cancer on April 23. Green was Jett's favorite color. Humphreys never stopped playing volleyball as he and his family dealt with the heartbreaking situation. The sport was his coping mechanism. For that reason, he never told his teammates. ...

Burlington County Jail inmatesfamilies worry as 11 more officers test positive for COVID-19

Gambar
As of May 15, 20 correctional officers at the jail had tested positive for COVID-19, and while county officials have implemented stricter mitigation measures to prevent the spread into the jail population, some inmates and their families feel it's still not enough. MOUNT HOLLY — After nine correctional officers at the Burlington County Jail tested positive for COVID-19 in mid-April, William Riley and those incarcerated in his housing unit began tearing up their coounty-issued orange sweatshirts. They were making masks to protect themselves from the spread of the virus. "People are nervous, everybody's on edge, especially when we don't know what's going on," Riley, of Philadelphia, said earlier this month. As of May 15, 20 correctional officers at the jail had tested positive for COVID-19, and while county officials have implemented stricter mitigation measures to prevent the spread into the jail population, some inmates and their families fear ...

The business of staying in business: A Lincoln T-shirt shop's pandemic pivot

"Real early on, I had a little come-to-Jesus meeting with myself," the 66-year-old McCook native said. "I thought, 'This is going to get ugly.'" Poore had 29 employees, and he didn't want to lose them. He'd heard about the government's plan for what would become the Payroll Protection Program, and he wanted to be ready. He talked to his accountant, gathered his paperwork, filled out the required forms online as they became available and waited for the application period to begin. "I think I pushed send at one minute after midnight that Thursday night." A week later, he had his check. (Thanks to Union Bank and its own speedy response.) By then, Poore had already fashioned a new revenue source, tailored to the times. Decades of doing business and a knack for being light on his feet gave him a head start. "My son says I was thinking outside the box; I said I was born outside the box." Poore had a supplier in Pakistan he'd don...

Holy Tie-Dye! These Target Sweatshirts and Sweatpants Are Cute and Affordable

Gambar
At this moment, all I want to wear are clothes that make me smile, and tie-dye loungewear always seems to do the trick. Since I've been working from home, I've been wearing an endless rotation of cozy sweatpants, and I'm not complaining one bit. (I actually don't miss jeans at all.) While tie-dye pieces have the amazing ability to lift up our spirits, affordable ones from Target cheer us up even more. Not only are these pieces all under $30, but they are super cute and cozy, too. From a crewneck sweater to a hooded style, Target's selection of tie-dye pieces is pretty on point. Perhaps it's the fact that the print reminds us of our youth and takes us back to when times were simpler, but we can't wait to update our wardrobe with these colorful pieces. These comfortable sweatshirts and sweatpants come in an array of colors, ranging from a subtle olive to bright neon. Whether you're catching up on your favorite Netflix shows at home or FaceTiming your f...

MVRHS senior raises money for Save the Children

Linda Borges, a senior at the Martha's Vineyard Regional High School, is selling sweatshirts online to raise money for the Save the Children Fund. The fund was created to improve the lives of children through better education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. For her project, which serves as her senior capstone project at school, Linda said she wanted to do something for charity, and started thinking about ways she could help. "It became obvious to me that education would be at the center of my initiative," Linda said. "I think supporting the development of education for children, especially in vulnerable or developing areas of the world, is incredibly important." Linda said encouraging education and creativity during childhood allows opportunity to grow and prosper later on in life. "Children in underdeveloped countries have little access to quality education. That's why I chose Save the Children — they have been working to provide education for...

Column One: USC graduate picked up where he left off more than 60 years ago

© Dania Maxwell/Los Angeles Times/TNS Tom Capehart, an 85 year-old graduating senior athlete from USC, at home in Pasadena, Calif., on May 13, 2020. He left school in 1956 and returned this spring to finish his last two credits. LOS ANGELES — Finish what you start. For years the phrase gnawed at Tom Capehart, a four-sport, four-year USC student-athlete who never quite completed the conquest. Do it right or don't do it at all. For years, USC was on his resume, but it wasn't. USC was on his sweatshirts, but not his wall. USC occupied his heart, but not his legacy. In an era of big stories about college sports stars who can't wait to leave campus, this is the little tale about one who spent a lifetime aching to get back. Tom Capehart, 85, will be the literal definition of a graduating senior this week when he passes a two-credit course and completes his pursuit of a USC degree. Sixty-eight years after he started. The epitome of old school will gra...

Camden: Campaigns are heavy on merch

Gambar
Tim Eyman offers a slightly smaller range of swag, possibly from the same source as Sakharov because it's displayed on the same models with that familiar "far away" look. Former Bothell Mayor Joshua Freed's site also boasts a "merch store," with his and hers T-shirts, with or without a front pocket, a cap and a mug. By comparison, Gov. Jay Inslee has a relatively paltry offering of merchandise — one unisex T-shirt, a couple of vinyl bumper stickers and a pair of buttons. But Inslee's campaign website is also among the least engaging, with a studio headshot, a place to provide an email address, a button to click to get to the store, another to click to donate and a banner to click for a COVID-19 update. The merchandising of candidates hasn't spread further down the Washington ballot, yet. But there may come a time when political activists will have a drawer full of campaign T-shirts, or set a table with a complete set of coffee mugs from ...

Sweatshirts early this week to tank tops later; Virginia weather in a nutshell

Gambar
ROANOKE, Va. – So far, this has been one of the coolest Mays on record in our area. 2020, however, has been one of the warmest years on record for us. For now, we'll keep things cooler-than-average, with high temperatures Tuesday and Wednesday in the upper 50s and low to mid 60s. The wind, while not as bad as it was Monday, will still be noticeable. We'll be breezy at times Tuesday, but things should calm down mostly by Wednesday. Late Wednesday into Thursday, a warm front will lift north of the region. This means a pretty significant pattern flip for us and for most of the eastern U.S. By Thursday, our temperatures will top out in the 70s which is right in the sweet spot for this time of year. Come Friday and this weekend, a lot of us will make it into the 80s for the first time in over a month! Given the warm air, humidity, and a front in somewhat-close proximity to the region, we'll keep the chance for some hit-or-miss showers and storms in the forecast each afternoon th...

Spin Control: Some campaigns are heavy on ‘the merch’

Gambar
It may be a sign of age, but I can remember when the first thing a potential candidate did was hire a strategist and open an office. Now it seems the first thing is to put up a website and sell merchandise. Possibly thanks to the red-hat mania that Donald Trump started when he got into the presidential race, candidates today seem very attuned to "the merch." A quick perusal of the gubernatorial hopefuls shows four of the five top Republicans have taken the Trump model to heart and are offering an array of merch on their websites. Anton Sakharov, an Issaquah Republican, is trailing as far as contributions, but leading in terms of shopping options. Some of the shirts and sweatshirts have a choice of slogans as well as colors. His online store also has polo shirts, packable jackets, fleece jackets, cellphone cases, socks, camo caps, beanies, beach blankets and mugs with either his logo or "Socialism Sucks" – which is one of his key...

I Turned a Tie-Dye Hobby Into a Side Hustle. Here’s What I Use to Dye at Home.

Gambar
14 items in this article 3 items on sale! One of the author's tie-dye creations, in front of a very familiar print. Photo: Ali Eisner Four years ago, one of my favorite sweatshirts got a very bad oil stain on it. Instead of throwing it out, I decided to tie-dye it, drawing on techniques and muscle memory from my days tie-dyeing at day camp as a kid. The process from start to finish was simple enough, and I was honestly surprised by just how much I loved the end result. It looked so good, I was inspired to tie-dye other forgotten clothes in my closet, from silk blouses to socks to sweatpants, to give them a second life. My friends started to ask me about ...
